The Usual Suspects

Name: Drywood Termites

Category: Termites

Drywood termites are usually pale brown in color and have soft, cylindrically shaped bodies. During one stage of their lives, they form and later drop wings. Drywood termites are social insects that live in colonies of up to 2,500 members. They do not require contact with soil and infest only dry wood, so they are often found in attics or wooden window frames.

Tips for control and prevention of drywood termite infestations:

  • Store firewood and lumber away from the house.
  • Use 20-mesh screen on all windows, doors and ventilation openings for attics and crawl spaces.
  • Seal exposed wood with a coat of paint, varnish or other sealant. Be sure to seal nail holes and cracks also.
